Tips for victims of disaster before contacting insurance companies
Bay Area Tax Attorney Steve Moskowitz explained to KGO why it is essential that victims have an experienced attorney and appraiser when filing claims with their insurance company in the wake of a natural disaster.
According to Moskowitz, insurance companies will often offer a quick settlement. However, when accepting a settlement, victims will likely be required to sign a General Release. A general release will prevent them from ever getting another penny. That means if the loss is later determined to be greater than the amount settled, that victim is out of luck.
An experienced attorney and appraiser will be able to help you distinguish what is best for you and fight to get you full compensation.
