We hope that the first quarter of 2024 has treated you well!  April 15th is right around the corner, and we want to remind you to file your 2023 tax returns and pay any taxes that you owe.

Your individual federal and state of California income tax returns are due April 15, 2024. However, there is an extension for San Diego Country at this time for taxpayers affected by severe storms and flooding that began on Jan. 21. These taxpayers now have until June 17, 2024, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.

Several other states and areas have extensions as well. This is the full current list of extensions granted by the IRS.

Please Protect Yourself from Harmful Scams

In addition to making sure your taxes are in order, we also want to emphasize the importance of vigilance to ensure the safety of your personal and financial information. Here are a few steps we recommend you take to protect yourself:

  1. Verify Sender: Always double-check the sender’s email address to ensure it is from a legitimate source. For example, our official communications will come from email addresses at our domain, moskowitzllp.com. Be wary of any variations or misspellings.
  2. Exercise Caution with Links and Attachments: Avoid clicking on any links or downloading attachments from emails that seem suspicious, even if they appear to be from someone you know. If in doubt, please contact the sender directly via their phone number or through their verified email address.
  3. Stay Informed: Remain vigilant and stay informed about common phishing tactics and scams. Regularly review resources provided by reputable sources on how to recognize and avoid fraudulent activities. Like this one from the IRS: “Tips to help taxpayers recognize tax scams”.
  4. Obtain an IP PIN (Identity Protection Personal Identification Number) from the IRS to protect your identity: If you don’t already have an IP PIN, you may get an IP PIN as a proactive step to protect yourself from tax-related identity theft. For more information on how to obtain an IP PIN from the IRS, please contact our office. We would also suggest you read this article from the IRS.
